Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Install on Quest, in the card above, is the one-click USB install. These steps are the manual path (SideQuest or ADB).

Overview

oot-vr by gibranfelix puts The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo, 1998) in first person on Meta Quest, running natively on the headset: no PC needed to play. It's built on Shipwright-VR (ShinyWindow), Ship of Harkinian 9.2.3 (HarbourMasters), Shipwright-Android (linkzenic) and the zeldaret decompilation. The camera sits at Link's eye height and follows your head (a third-person view is also available), with automatic world scale for child and adult Link.

Install type: APK + your own game files. You select your dump in the headset, and the game builds its files from it.

[!IMPORTANT] No ROM or game assets are included. You must own Ocarina of Time and make a dump of your own cartridge or disc. The project does not supply ROMs. Fan project, not affiliated with Nintendo or Meta.

[!NOTE] Beta. v0.9.4-beta (October 26, 2026). The developer tested many areas, from Kokiri Forest to the fight with Ganon, but has not played the full story from start to end; read STATUS.md and the open issues. Tested on Meta Quest 3S, with the European GameCube version.

Highlights:

  • Physical weapons: swing the sword, Deku stick and Megaton Hammer; hold the shield to block (the Mirror Shield reflects Twinrova's beams); aim the bow, slingshot and hookshot, and the shot goes along the weapon; throw the boomerang, bombs, Deku nuts and bombchus with your arm.
  • Item selector you grab with your hand, a HUD on your wrist, and menus on a floating panel with a laser pointer.
  • Explore (adult Link with every item, song and medallion), Boss Rush and Arena (waves of enemies).
  • Ship of Harkinian mods (textures, models, translations) installed from the headset.
  • Stereo 3D with refresh switching automatically between 90 Hz and 72 Hz.

Prerequisites

  • A Meta Quest 3 or 3S with Developer Mode enabled (Meta's device setup).
  • A PC (Windows, macOS or Linux) with SideQuest, and a USB-C cable.
  • A dump of your own Ocarina of Time cartridge or disc, in one of these versions:
Platform Region Versions
Nintendo 64 Europe (PAL) 1.0, 1.1
Nintendo 64 North America (NTSC-U) 1.0, 1.1, 1.2
Nintendo 64 Japan (NTSC-J) 1.0, 1.1, 1.2
GameCube Europe (PAL) Ocarina of Time, Master Quest
GameCube North America (NTSC-U) Ocarina of Time, Master Quest
GameCube Japan (NTSC-J) Ocarina of Time, Master Quest, Collector's Edition

Compare your dump's SHA-1 with port/docs/supportedHashes.json.

Step-by-Step Installation

1. Install the APK

Download oot-vr-v0.9.4-beta.apk via 1-click on QuestPorts or from GitHub Releases. Connect the headset to the PC, select Always allow from this computer and Allow in the headset, then drag the APK into SideQuest, or:

adb install -r oot-vr-v0.9.4-beta.apk

2. Copy your dump

With the SideQuest file manager, copy your dump into the headset's Download folder, or:

adb push <your-dump>.z64 /sdcard/Download/

3. First start

  1. In the headset, open Library > Unknown Sources > OoT VR.
  2. Select Select ROM, then select your dump in the Download folder.
  3. Wait a few minutes for the extraction, and don't remove the headset.
  4. Optional: select Allow to use mods.

The game makes oot.o2r from your dump; you can delete the dump afterwards. Later starts go directly to the game.

Updates

The game looks for a new release at each start (the headset needs internet). When one is available, the menu opens on the file select screen; you can also use VR Settings > Update at any time. Select Update, allow installs from this source the first time, confirm on the installer panel, and open OoT VR again. Your saves stay.

Mods

The game loads Ship of Harkinian mods (.o2r, .otr, .zip, .7z). Mods are not part of oot-vr; their authors provide them. First select VR Settings > Mods > Allow Access.

  • Automatic: in VR Settings > Mods, select Download below a mod (twice), then restart the game.
  • Manual: copy the mod into the headset's Download folder, select VR Settings > Mods > Add Mods, pick the file, then restart.
  • Change the load order in the SoH menu: Settings > Mod Menu.

Controls

Control Action
Left thumbstick Move Link
Right thumbstick left / right / down Put the C-Left, C-Right or C-Down item in your hand
Right thumbstick up Talk to Navi
Right thumbstick click (hold) Item selector: move your hand to an item, then release
Left trigger Use the item (bow: hold to pull, release to shoot)
Right trigger Z-target
Right grip Boomerang: hold, throw with your arm, release
Both grips (hold) Hold the sword and the shield
A / B N64 A / N64 B
Y Open or close the SoH menu
Left Menu button Start (pause screen)

By default you turn with your body and the HUD is on your wrist. VR Settings > Quick Setup changes the view (first or third person), sword hand (right or left), right stick (items, snap turn or smooth turn), item use (item selector or C buttons) and HUD position.

Troubleshooting & Tips

The dump is not accepted: use one of the supported N64 or GameCube versions and compare its SHA-1 with port/docs/supportedHashes.json; dump your own cartridge or disc (the project gives no ROMs). The first start seems stuck: the extraction takes a few minutes; keep the headset on. The game does not start: read "If the game does not start" in port/Android/README.md. Mods don't load: allow access in VR Settings > Mods > Allow Access, then restart the game; change the order in the SoH menu > Settings > Mod Menu. The update won't install: allow installs from this source when the headset asks, or install the new APK once with SideQuest. The game keeps running while the SoH menu is open. You want stick turning or the HUD in front: use VR Settings > Quick Setup. Known issues (for example Link walking through some walls) are in STATUS.md and the GitHub issues. Fan project, not affiliated with Nintendo or Meta; no ROM or game assets are provided.
